How to Prepare for a Newborn Photoshoot (Stress-Free Guide for New Parents)

Bringing a new baby into the world is a whirlwind. It's beautiful, emotional, and often overwhelming.
If you’ve booked a newborn session (or you’re thinking about it), you might be wondering…“How do I actually prepare?”
Don’t worry, you don’t need to have everything perfect. This guide will walk you through exactly how to get ready for a calm, relaxed newborn photoshoot.
1. Don’t Stress—Your Baby Sets the Pace
The most important thing to know? Your baby is in charge.
Newborn sessions are designed to be slow, flexible, and completely baby-led. There’s time for:
Feeding
Changing
Settling
Nothing is rushed so you can relax.
2. Feed Baby Just Before the Session
A full baby = a sleepy, content baby (which is perfect for those curled-up poses).
Try to:
Feed your baby right before the session starts
Or even once you arrive
Don’t worry if feeding doesn’t go to plan. We simply work around your baby.
3. Keep Baby Warm and Comfortable
Newborns love warmth. It helps them stay settled and sleepy.
During the session:
The studio will be cosy and warm
Baby may be photographed wrapped or lightly clothed
Dress baby in something easy to remove (like a zip sleepsuit) to avoid disturbing them.
4. What Should You Wear?
I offer dresses for mums but it's optional. Keep it simple and timeless.
For parents:
Neutral tones (white, beige, browns)
Avoid bold patterns or logos
Comfortable, flattering outfits
For baby:
Outfits are provided
5. Expect a Relaxed, Longer Session
Newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours (if you offer full sessions).
That might sound long but it allows time for:
Settling
Feeding breaks
Gentle posing
6. What to Bring
You don’t need much, but here are a few essentials:
Extra nappies
Milk / feeding supplies
A dummy (even if baby doesn’t usually use one. It can help briefly)
A spare outfit
Things to keep older siblings busy
Snacks (I do provide some snacks but you're more than welcome to bring your own as well)
7. What If Baby Doesn’t Settle?
This is one of the biggest worries and completely normal.
Babies don’t need to be perfectly sleepy to get beautiful images.
Some of the most special photos happen when:
Baby is awake
Making eye contact
Stretching or reacting
Your session will be adapted to your baby’s mood.
8. It’s About Capturing Your Baby As They Are
Newborn photography isn’t about perfection, it’s about connection.
Tiny details, little expressions, and those early days that pass so quickly.
9. Missed the Newborn Stage? It’s Not Too Late
If you’re reading this and thinking: “I didn’t book in time…”
Please know it’s never too late. Older babies bring smiles, personality and interaction.
If you’re based in or near Wrexham, I also offer short, relaxed baby mini sessions that are perfect for capturing this stage 🤍
