Balancing Business and Motherhood: How I Manage to run my Photography business as a Mum with an 18 Month Old

Being a mum to an 18-month-old while running a business from home is a challenge that many can relate to. It often feels like a constant juggling act between caring for your little one and meeting work demands. Yet, despite the sleepless nights and the tight schedule, the rewards of this lifestyle make every effort worthwhile.

At the moment working as a self-employed mum, my working hours aren't a 9-5 work schedule with a toddler to look after. I work mostly during Lawra’s naps, after she goes to bed and weekends. It’s not always easy to stay productive in short bursts, but it helps me stay present for my daughter while still moving my business forward. She does go to nursery once a week but you can imagine that day how quickly it goes by to try and fit a shoot in and as much work as possible.

With a toddler around, interruptions are inevitable. I’ve learned to prioritize tasks that require deep focus for when Lawra is asleep. Simpler or more routine tasks get done while she’s awake and playing nearby. This approach helps me maintain progress without feeling overwhelmed.

You might ask, what about the chores around the house? Sometimes I have to tell myself to put work aside for a bit and sort out the house but as other parents can relate, sorting the house out with children around, especially if you're running your own business, is a challenge. Having help from my husband as well with house chores does make a difference. We are both self-employed and we do both feel that most of the time we are running around like nutters.

Trying to do everything perfectly is impossible. I remind myself that it’s okay if some days don’t go as planned. Sometimes, I have to let go of less urgent work or household chores to focus on what matters most.

Seeing Lawra grow while building my business is incredibly motivating. Every milestone she reaches and every small business success feels like a win worth celebrating. This positive perspective helps me push through the tough days. It is definitely hard work but I wouldn't change it for the world.
